Re-imagining Schools Listening Sessions

7/12/20, 7/30/20, 8/30/20

Hosted by: Saline Supports our Community

Presented by: Michigan Education Justice Coalition

SSOC was proud host 2 community & 1 student listening sessions for re-imagining our schools after a public health crisis (COVID).

From MEJC: "We all have important experiences and insights in this moment: our struggles and our fears, our hopes and our needs for the future. Through this listening session, we hope to gain a better understanding of what people need to feel safe with school reopening plans this fall. Then, we want to understand your values around school budgets. With potential cuts to school budgets, which will have long-term consequences, we want to know what you think should and should not be prioritized. Lastly, we want to invite you to reimagine education moving beyond this crisis. As educators, students, parents, and community members, we need to play a critical role in shaping what education looks like after this crisis. We want to learn from you: What would an equitable, humanizing, community-based education system look like?"

We had great turnout and heard many great ideas and insightful perspectives!

Energized by recent events, SSOC strengthened its resolve to address underlying causes of racism & bigotry, and to build a more equitable and just community that is safe for all.

Community members were invited to learn about a form of conflict resolution focused on nonviolent communication intervention strategies and methods to de-escalate a variety of both physical and verbal situations. There was a focus on racial bias, prejudice, discrimination, and systems of oppression.
